چکیده

Abstract. The truncated singular value decomposition is a popular solution method for linear discrete ill-posed problems. These problems are numerically underdetermined. Therefore, it can be beneficial to incorporate information about the desired solution into the solution process. This paper describes a modification of the singular value decomposition that permits a specified linear subspace to be contained in the solution subspace for all truncations. Modifications that allow the range to contain a specified subspace, or that allow both the solution subspace and the range to contain specified subspaces also are described.

Inverse subspace problems with applications

Given a square matrix A, the inverse subspace problem is concerned with determining a closest matrix to A with a prescribed invariant subspace. When A is Hermitian, the closest matrix may be required to be Hermitian. We measure distance in the Frobenius norm and discuss applications to Krylov subspace methods for the solution of large-scale linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems as...

Tikhonov regularization based on generalized Krylov subspace methods

We consider Tikhonov regularization of large linear discrete ill-posed problems with a regularization operator of general form and present an iterative scheme based on a generalized Krylov subspace method. This method simultaneously reduces both the matrix of the linear discrete ill-posed problem and the regularization operator. The reduced problem so obtained may be solved, e.g., with the aid ...

The methods applied to regularization of the ill-posed problems can be classified under “direct” and “indirect” methods. Practice has shown that the effects of different regularization techniques on an ill-posed problem are not the same, and as such each ill-posed problem requires its own investigation in order to identify its most suitable regularization method. In the geoid computations witho...

Combining approximate solutions for linear discrete ill-posed problems

Linear discrete ill-posed problems of small to medium size are commonly solved by first computing the singular value decomposition of the matrix and then determining an approximate solution by one of several available numerical methods, such as the truncated singular value decomposition or Tikhonov regularization. The determination of an approximate solution is relatively inexpensive once the s...

On the Choice of Subspace for Iterative Methods for Linear Discrete Ill-posed Problems

with a large matrix A of ill-determined rank. Thus, A has many “tiny” singular values of different orders of magnitude. In particular, A is severely ill-conditioned. Some of the singular values of A may be vanishing. We allow m ≥ n or m < n. The right-hand side vector b̃ is not required to be in the range of A. Linear systems of equations of the form (1) with a matrix of ill-determined rank are ...
